Taking a puff of that cigarette in an apartment building in California could soon become the thing of the past.
By Sajid Farooq
If one California lawmaker has his way, it could get a lot harder to smoke in apartment buildings.
The state Senate passed a measure Monday that would give some landlords the ability to designate some apartment buildings as smoke free.
"While more than 86 percent of Californians do not smoke, there is very little smoke-free rental housing in California," Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) told the Los Angeles Times. "With this bill, we have an opportunity to expand the availability of smoke-free housing for families throughout our state."
The argument is that smoke from one apartment could drift into another and cause ill health effects for neighbors.
The bill must go before the state Assembly before becoming law.
